Our Favorite Vegan Donuts (Gluten Free, Cane Sugar Free, Soy Free)

Everyone has a guilty pleasure that they indulge in on the occasion, even us vegans🤷🏾‍♀️. Sometimes, it is hard to control how frequent we indulge in them due to the constant cravings of sweet and salty food. Unfortunately, over time, these craving can lead to other issues if we don't control them. Thankfully though, there are ways to enjoy our favorite cravings and avoid much of the processed and gut inflaming additions in them by creating healthier versions in our own kitchen. Find out how to make your very own gluten free, cane sugar free, and soy free donuts to enjoy (almost) guilt free .

This recipe (inspired by theminimalisticbaker) yields moist and rich donuts. You will not be disappointed. Let's get right on into it! 

READY IN: 30 - 40 minutes YIELDS: 11-12 Donuts



Doughnut Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup coconut cream

  • 1/2 cup (warmed) unsweetened plain almond milk

  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil

  • 1/2 tsp of stevia or your choice of granulated sweetener

  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or agave nectar

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

  • 1/2 tsp of salt

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce (or mashed sweet potato)

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 3/4 cup almond flour

  • 1 cup gluten-free flour blend

  • 1.5 flax or alternative egg

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (optional, if you want chocolate donuts)


Rooted Vigor's special addition: 1 tbsp of Black Maca Root and Cordyceps Mushroom Powder (optional)

Caramel Glaze Ingredients (optional)

  • 1 Tbsp of Maple Syrup

  • 1 pinch of sea salt

  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

  • 3 tbsp of coconut oil

  • if you want chocolate glaze, add 2 tbsp of cacao powder, (adding more if desired).


Step By Step Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 F and lightly coat your donut pan with coconut oil.

Step 2: While the oven is preheating, prepare doughnut mixture. To a large mixing bowl, add the melted coconut oil. Then add the stevia sweetener, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and sea salt and whisk vigorously to combine - about 40 seconds. Then add applesauce and warmed almond milk and whisk for 20 more seconds to combine.

Step 3: In a separate bowl (or if desire put it in the same bowl), add dry ingredients (baking powder, baking soda, almond flour, and gluten-free flour) and mix evenly to combine.


Step 4: Mix the dry and wet ingredients together, whisking until even. Gently stir/whisk in the flax or alternative egg, trying to be as gentle as possible. If the batter seems too thin, add 1 Tbsp of almond or gluten-free flour at a time until thickens . It should be semi-thick and to test for this is should be more scoopable than pourable.

*make sure to get all of the lumps out. I have lumps because I didn't sift my dry ingredients ).



Step 4: Once that is complete, divide batter evenly in the donut tins, filling them all the way full. There should be more or less 11-12 donuts. Bake the donuts for 15-20 minutes or until a knife (or toothpick) inserted into the center comes out clean and the top appears dry and fluffy. Time will vary depending on your stove and the addition of any ingredients.


Step 5 (optional): In the meantime, make your glaze. To a small mixing bowl, add melted coconut oil, maple syrup, salt, and vanilla extract. Whisk to combine. You should have a slightly thick glaze. If too thick, thin with a little maple syrup or more coconut oil. If too thin, add powder.


Step 6: Once donuts are complete, remove donuts from oven and let cool for 1-2 minutes. Then grab the tins with a towel and tap on the counter 2 times to loosen. Then gently invert onto a cooling rack. Let cool for 5 minutes (the longer they cool, the more they'll firm up).


Step 7: Dip in glaze. Then top with desired toppings, such as nuts, dried fruit, coconut flakes, or cacao nibs!


KEEP IN MIND. Donuts are best when fresh. Store cooled leftovers covered at room temperature up to 3 days or in the freezer up to 1 month (best if stored unglazed).
